CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT
Young people need to feel safe and comfortable in order to unleash their inner contemporary dancer. Yellow Wheel creates a company environment where our dancers feel safe, valued and equal, regardless of age, gender, race or previous experience. We offer a professional setting where young dancers can experience what it is like to be a part of the working contemporary dance industry, and prepare them for further training and professional work.
PROFESSIONAL DANCE PRACTICE & CONNECTION TO INDUSTRY
Through rigorous technical training, and development in improvisation and choreographic processes, our dancers learn what it truly means to be a contemporary artist today. The company meets twice a week throughout most of the year to learn essential skills and develop and perform major dance works. Yellow Wheel invites guest artists to share their knowledge and experience with the company, and we collaborate with designers to produce leading contemporary dance works with young people.
OUR VOICE, YOUR VOICE
Young people are the future of our industry and the earlier they get to hone their craft the better. Yellow Wheel’s programming puts the voice of our company members at the forefront, giving them to confidence and the experience to turn their thoughts into actions. We give them the opportunity each year to create and present their own choreographic works in a season we title: Trip The Light, under the mentorship of Yellow Wheel staff.
Major Seasons
Yellow Wheel has presented a major season of contemporary work annually since it was founded in 2012. Our major season connects a professional choreographer with our young company members, who then collaboratively develop the work, alongside a team of designers. Our works have been presented in a range of traditional and site-specific venues across Melbourne, inviting our young casts into the literal brick-and-mortar of our industry. Choreographers for Yellow Wheel have strong practices, exciting ideas, and are generous in their offerings to the young people involved.
Choreographic Seasons
Each year Yellow Wheel presents Trip The Light, our company choreographic season. This program is an opportunity for company members to create and present their own short works. The young choreographers are mentored by Yellow Wheel staff throughout the application process, conceptualisation, development, rehearsals and performance of their works, which are then documented.
Intensives & Other Opportunities
Yellow Wheel offers annual contemporary dance training intensives and external creative opportunities for young dancers, both for those who are a part of the company and those not. Some of these include programs such as the Australian Youth Dance Festival, Meet Up, and our very own Summer School. Each of these occasions involve professional dance artists to share their practice with the participants, generating a relevant and genuine learning experience.
